Letter, 1849 Dec. 19, Charleston (S.C.), to R[owland] G. Hazard, Peacedale (R.I.)

Business letter to colleague in Rhode Island discussing market for fabric that had been shipped to Charleston, S.C., intended to cloth slaves. Lawton criticizes policy of supplying the same "description" of "Negro Cloth" to several businesses in the city, stating that "experience has shown the error of this policy to the English manufactuers and it is now beginning to be understood on this side the Atlantic," and proposing "to open negociation ... for Negro Cloth for the next season."
